I totally agree with you Paul, great series with great music. Nice remix of my own favourite cue 'Strange Land':Ī concert compilation showing how popular the music still is to this day, including unreleased music: I leave you with great examples of Clannad's work on this classic tv series.Īn awsome example of the scoring in a scene, an incredible Tolkienesque pretitle sequence: Despite the fantasy, it still has a more realistic approach and guts than any effort made since.Īn expanded album would be a fitting tribute to a great show and it's writer/creator. It's still unsurpassed by either Hollywood or the BBC. It's influence is felt in all subsequent versions of the Robin Hood legend, particularly the elements of mysticism, fantasy and the idea of ethnic members of the band of merry men. I even had the privilage of meeting and chatting with Kip a couple of times.īut his greatest achievement is surely Robin of Sherwood, which starred in turn Michael Praed and Jason Connery. Other adventure and comedy shows such as The Adventures of Black Beauty, Smuggler, The Ghosts of Motley Hall entertained a generation of children. A comic fantasy apparently soon to be remade for the big screen. His first show, Catweazle about a medieval wizard transported to the 20th century is another classic. 'Kip' Carpenter, as he was known to his friends, a former actor, was a writer/creator of many fine family adventure series of the 70s and 80s. They couldn't possibly lose anything by it, and would gain much appreciation. An complete bumper package of all the music for this fine series is desired by many fans of both the classic show and the band itself. Together with the band's obvious capability of rerecording their music for the first series, I think the remaining tracks not included on the original release should at last be made available. It appears that many of the original tapes are lost, but many must remain as the dvds of the second and third (final) series contain music only options. I always felt a second album with more of the incidental underscoring, of which we are so fond, should have been made available. But it was woefully short, possibly to keep it feeling like a regular album of their particular folk/pop blend, so as to not put off their usual audience. The music, despite being electronic at times perfectly evokes the historic feel due to the folk side of things.īack in the 80s the band put out their latest album, Legend, which was the soundtrack to this landmark series. The result is one of the finest examples of a screen drama being scored by a band. With the sad death of British tv writer Richard Carpenter recently I'm reminded of his greatest legacy, Robin of Sherwood, and the fact that it's high time an expanded release was put out by the Irish band Clannad who composed their excellent music to his creation.Īlthough the producers nearly went down the usual route of traditional orchestral scoring, they stuck with Clannad after the band got so enthusiastic, after being asked to pen a theme they asked to score it all.
